In another world, there exist creatures known as Shinigami, or death gods. They watch over the human world and are in control of each persons life. When someone is due to die, they write the persons name down in a book each of them own, called a Death Note. Every now and then, a Death Note gets tossed into the human world, so what will happen when a human discovers it...?

The story focuses on Light Yagami, a 17-year-old Japanese student with a very successful school record and highly respected reputation. Although he is content on the outside, inside, he secretly longs for the deaths of all those who commit crimes. He wishes for God to pass judgementjudgment over them, and make the world a place of peace. When he discovers a recently 'misplaced' Death Note, he decides it's time to make his dream a reality...
